Non Euclidean Geometry and 4D Dimensional

English | Xvid | 688x522 | 25fps | MP3 | 128kbps | ~300MB | RS.com

A look at Mathematicians in History who speculated about the existence of Non Euclidean Geometries and a short programme about Paul Banchoffs attempts to look into the 4th Dimension by visualising Hypercubes.
The look at Non Euclidean Geometry is part of the History of Mathematics and profiles some of the main figures involved including Carl Friedrich Gauss & Wolfgan & Yanosh Bolyai. The programme also examines the different Geometries that they explored. The short about Paul Banchoffs attempts to visualise the unseeable 4th Dimension is intriguing and includes a nice animation of a hypercube. (or tesseract)

31. If we had no Moon
Discovery Channel

What would life on earth be like without the moon? Well, chances are, there wouldn't be any life on earth without the moon. Life – if it had started at all – would still be in the earliest stages of evolution.

Scientists use the latest computer simulations to show how an ancient rogue planet – Orpheus – collided with the earth millions of years ago, producing a sizable chunk of debris that eventually became our moon. If that collision had never occurred, we would live in a very different place. Imagine a moon-less weather report – blizzards over the Sahara, floodwaters swallowing the Pyramids, 90-degree temperatures in Antarctica. As the earth wobbles on its axis – unsecured by the moon's gravitational pull – the polar caps would grow and recede at frightening rates. And without the moon, our planet would spin much faster – meaning four-hour days and searing temperatures.

Worse yet, evidence reveals that we are in fact losing our grip on our lunar friend thanks to the ebb and flow of the oceans' tides. Experts reveal theories for salvaging the moon – including hijacking Europa from Jupiter – and demonstrate how we can prepare ourselves for our eventual life without it.

32. Once upon a time: Life

A popular French animated series (translated into English too) exploring how the body works (life science). The series usually featured a different organ or system each week e.g. the skin, circulatory system, immune system.

Maestro, a bearded old man, ran the brain... red blood cells ran little bubbles of oxygen to the muscles... the white blood cells were comprised of foot patrol "policemen" and marshalls in small flying craft.

The series makes use of recurring characters. The lead white blood cell characters resemble two of the humans whose bodies are explored throughout the series. The lead red blood cell characters resemble the two other main human bodies that are explored. The "bad guy" humans bear a strong resemblane to the virus and bacteria cells that sometimes attack the body.

The series combined entertaining story lines with an enormous amount of factual information.

1. The cell planet
2. Birth
3. The body sentinels
4. The bone marrow
5. The blood
6 .The tiny platelets
7. The heart
8. Breathing
9. The brain
10. The neurones
11. The eye
12. The ear
13. The skin
14. The mouth and the teeth
15. The digestion
16. The liver factory
17. The kidneys
18. The lymphatic system
19. The bones and the skeleton
20. The muscle and the fat
21. Toxin wars
22. The vaccination
23. The hormones
24. The chain of life
25. Repairs and changes
26. And life goes on

33. Fossil Detectives [BBC]

Chris Lambert writing in The Times introduced this, "entertaining new eight-part series", and commended guest, David Attenborough, "who, with trademark infectious enthusiasm, reveals his early passion for fossil hunting".[1] Emily Ford said that, "Palaeontologists probably still curse Ross from Friends for giving their profession a reputation of such yawn-inducing dullness, but you don’t have to be a prehistory nut to enjoy fossils". "And you can see David Attenborough get all misty-eyed as he caresses the vertebrae of a long-lost Diplodocus."[2]
Anna Lowman writing about episode two in The Guardian commended it as a "quirky documentary," and a "cosy Open University-produced programme," with the, "Fossil Detectives (apparently comprising just one very enthusiastic lady)".[3] Nancy Banks-Smith went on to say, "there is nothing that would not be improved by the addition of a dinosaur", adding, "which is why David Attenborough said that he would like to be back in the time of the dinosaurs. 'To film it', he added, brightening visibly. Of course, his brother felt much the same way, but that ended rather badly."[4] Sarah Dempster writing about episode three in the same publication commended this, "affable archaeology series," for telling us about, 'special soil and "evolutionary robotics', before showing us something beige that was once, apparently, a quite important dinosaur. Champion."[5]

34. Uderstanding bacteria [Discovery Channel]

The experts say this is the beginning of the golden age of microbiology. Industry, medicine, the definition of life itself, are all being changed by single-celled creatures you and I can’t even see. But the news is not all good. Many people are spooked by the diseases caused bybacteria: Pneumonia, Salmonella, meningitis… all caused by bacteria and passed among us every day. Infectious diseases are the greatest cause of illness and death in human history. Bacteria can make us deathly sick and often kill us. And just when we develop medicines to kill the germs, they do what they do best… mutate, find ways to resist our medicines. Now we are bombarded with products that promise to kill these germs. The number of new antibacterial products has tripled. But does the use of these products just make the germs even more resistant?
At the same time, the search for new microbial life has taken researchers from the lab to the ocean floor and to the heavens. A meteorite from Mars has fossilized structures on it that look suspiciously like smallbacteria . Scientists are coming to the conclusion that life may be far more common in the universe than we had supposed. Anywhere that there is liquid water, there is a possibility of life, and, in fact, anywhere on Earth where there is liquid water, you find there is life. And so on worlds such as Mars or Europa where there may be hydrothermal features under the ice, the prospect of finding microbial life is very exciting.
