Episode 1: The Spy from Moscow
The first programme examines the work of Soviet colonel Oleg Penkovsky, who relayed huge amounts of technical information to MI6 and the CIA during the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 even as KGB agents were trying to track him down.
Episode 2: Superspy
The work of German refugee Klaus Fuchs, who was posted during World War Two to the high-security weapons lab where J Robert Oppenheimer and his scientific team were building the bombs later dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Despite being under FBI surveillance, Fuchs smuggled a complete blueprint out of the building and passed it to the Russians - laying the foundations for the Cold War.
Episode 3: Superbomb
Sean Pertwee narrates as the docu-drama series tells the story of the heavy price paid by one man in his efforts to stop the escalating arms race in the face of Cold War efforts to build the 'superbomb' - an atomic device so powerful it could push the world to the edge of destruction. Joe Jones and Shannon Whirry appear as the Oppenheimers.
Episode 4: Vanunu and the Bomb
Israeli nuclear technician Mordecai Vanunu's attempt to expose a top-secret Western-built bomb factory in the middle of the desert, which was owned by his own government. After revealing what he knew to the Sunday Times in September 1986, he was offered protection - which failed when he was kidnapped by Mossad operatives and charged with treason.
Episode 5: The Terror Trader
The story of Dr AQ Khan, a scientist who copied secret blueprints from his Dutch employers in a bid to make his native Pakistan a nuclear force, and became a national hero following the testing of his bomb design in 1998. However, the CIA and MI6 discovered the terrifying extent of his plans, and he was put under house arrest by President Pervez Musharraf in 2004, where he still remains. Last in series.
